60% Believe Easing Cross-Strait Exchanges More Beneficial to Taiwan Security

The latest October 23 poll released by My Formosa E-Newsletter posed questions on cross-strait issue. When asked, “Which of the following approaches do you think can better maintain Taiwan’s security and avoid a cross-strait war?”, 58.3 percent said “resuming cross-strait government negotiations and relaxing civil exchanges,” while 28.2 percent chose “increasing the national defense budget annually to purchase more arms.”
The poll also asked, “In which of the following areas do you think Taiwan and mainland China are more similar? (Multiple choices allowed).” Results show that 66.6 percent chose language and writing, 61.5 percent history and culture, 59.9 percent blood ties, 53.9 percent religion and folk customs, 16.6 percent social life and values, and 6.4 percent ideology and political systems, with 11.9 percent not giving a clear answer.
The survey further asked, “Which of the following approaches do you think can better maintain Taiwan’s security and avoid a cross-strait war?” Some 58.3 percent supported “resuming cross-strait government negotiations and relaxing civil exchanges,” 28.2 percent backed “increasing the defense budget annually to purchase weapons,” 3.0 percent supported “fully cooperating with U.S. President Donald Trump’s requests,” and 10.4 percent gave no clear answer.
Another question asked, “Some say that to resolve the long-standing political disputes between Taiwan and mainland China, a military conflict is ultimately unavoidable. Do you agree with this statement?” Results show 31.4 percent agreed (7.7 percent strongly agree, 23.7 percent somewhat agree), 60.0 percent disagreed (32.1 percent strongly disagree, 27.9 percent somewhat disagree), and 8.6 percent gave no clear answer.
The poll also asked, “Some say that to protect Taiwan’s sovereignty and prevent unification by Communist China, every citizen should be willing to pay any price, even sacrifice their lives for Taiwan if necessary. Do you agree with this statement?” Some 40.8 percent agreed (20.2 percent strongly agree, 20.6 percent somewhat agree), 53.2 percent disagreed (35.8 percent strongly disagree, 17.4 percent somewhat disagree), and 6 percent gave no clear answer.
The survey was commissioned by My Formosa E-Newsletter. The poll was carried out from October 20 to 22, 2025, across 22 special municipalities, counties and cities in Taiwan, targeting citizens aged 20 and above registered in these areas. Both landline and mobile phone sampling methods were used. A total of 1,077 valid responses were collected (700 via landline, 377 via mobile). At a 95-percent confidence level, the maximum sampling error was plus or minus 3.0 percent.
